The engineering buro Prof. Dr.-Ing. Bodo Ruck is working in the field of wind loading on technical and natural structures. The buro specializes in calculating wind loads on greening elements in urban areas. These include wind loads on individual trees or tree clusters as well as on mobile urban trees in planters or greenery elements that are integrated into the façade of buildings. The acting wind forces and the resulting moments must be determined for a safe design. Also problems on wind sheltering are tackled.

When trees are integrated into the façade of buildings, they must meet the same safety requirements as building parts such as technical façade elements, balconies, wind breakers, roofs, etc. The technical wind loading standard in Europe, which then also applies for integrated trees is: EUROCODE  EN 1991-1-4: 2010  Actions on structures - Part 1-4: General actions - Wind actions.

That means that integrated trees have to withstand the same design wind velocities as the building or parts of it. The design velocities (gust velocities) are given in the EUROCODE and stem from meteorological observations carried out during decades. They are based on a 50 years’ return period (highest gust velocities measured within 50 years).

By a suitable dimensioning of protection volumes actuating surfaces of industry and trade can be wind-calmed.
